I am reading Beauty: The Invisible Embrace by John Donaghue, whose beautiful writing I have not read for several years. I have been absorbed by this book and have just read it in one go. At the end of the book, there is a story of a local Irish mystic who was often sought out for his wisdom.
Asked to reflect on how he managed the edge of listening to the troubles of others, he replied "I made a bargain with myself as a young man that I would always remain best friends with myself. I am now an old man now and I have never broke that bargain".
I screamed aloud when I read that line in both delight and deep recognition. To always remain best friends with myself. That feels like a powerful bargain to make.
