The Braver I Am, The Luckier I Get

Writer: Cath Shaw Brave As FuckCath Shaw Brave As Fuck

Today I started writing a work article reflecting on Covid-19 and how we have adapted as an organisation. I have resisted writing much in this job preferring to promote the work of others instead. Then I remembered the quote of my mum that I can’t ask others to be vulnerable without being willing to be vulnerable myself. And I remembered my commitment not to stay fearful and small.

I started writing. And I surprised myself by naturally writing with depth. I wrote about the areas of growth I have had in terms of choosing courage over comfort with online learning events. I quoted Carl Rogers that as long as some one feels safe and connecy , they will be able to learn. Otherwise creativity and imagination are lost. I wrote with confidence, vulnerability and bravery.

My phone rang while I was writing and it was an inspiring individual who I had set up a student placement with at the impressive community hub that she manages. We connected easily, catching up on how we have both been coping over the last few months. I told her that my mum had zoom bombed two work meetings this week and she said her kids had taken to going under the table and tickling her when she was in board meetings.

We realised we had a shared past of techno parties in the nineties and had been to the same underground tunnel party at Kelvinbridge (which was stopped abruptly by the police). We spoke with openness and connection, sharing favourite authors and our commitment to our own inner revolutions as single, fabulous women.

She told me how she had persuaded the Board she works for to give each employee a Self Care day a month to allow them to do something entirely for themselves-go in nature, fish, swim, garden. The rationale for this was to allow each individual space and time to reconnect with themselves after the experiences of a global pandemic crisis. So that they are whole and connected when they return to work.

This conversation inspired me further in my writing and I then included this kind-hearted example of third sector awesomeness. And this is when I realised, that the braver I am, the luckier I get. That the more I push myself to be brave then the more conversations with people flow, opportunities arise, connections are made and everything just seems easier, more authentic and more enjoyable. #intheflow #thebravieriamtheluckieriam #braveasfuck.
