Yesterday, I delivered online training. I had encouraged one of co-workers, who has just finished her young apprencticeship to provide technical support. She was ace. What I really valued as facilitator was creating a safe and positive learning environment for this individual and also the others who were on the course.
Last week, I invited one of the younger link workers from a third sector to talk to us about her role. She was full of energy and enthusiasm. I invited her to stay on and help with bits of the training to increase her skills and confidence.I had also encouraged her to write an article last month about her job during lockdown. She wrote an incredible article.
I also asked a former student to write an article on her job as an island social worker. She wrote such a reflective, well written piece that showed her development from an excellent student into an excellent social worker.
Recently, I have recognised the limitations that I have put on myself professionally because of the way that I have perceived and internalised comments from a former boss. I am not sure why she made these comments and from a compassionate perspective, I like to think she did not intend to cause such lasting shame.
Yesterday I realised that I have not continued that pattern, that I instinctively nurture the skills and confidence of others. During yesterday's training, I messaged my co-worker to say that I was loving her work-she replied that she was loving mine with a gif of Moira Rose from the awesome Schitt's Creek that said 'when one of us shines, we all shine'. #choosinglove #lifteachotherup #braveasfuck.
